Random Pictures.

10/21/2009 by paperlotusdesign

I’ve been up to random stuff lately. I thought about what I should blog about. What have I been up to? Random stuff. So here is some documentation of my random stuff. It may not be interesting to you but who am I writing this blog for, you or me? Actually I’m not sure.

1. Driving to work on the highway, in rush hour, with all the other cattle in our work clothes, cutting each other off, trying to wake up…it gives listening to Flight of the Conchords’ “It’s Business Time” a whole new, more unfortunate meaning.

2. I cooked some french green lentils and turkey sausage for dinner on Sunday. The carrots, onions and celery were so pretty that I had to get a picture.

3. When we moved a few months ago, I was so bummed that I had to toss my Cheesy Address Labels Collection. But thankfully, a new collection is starting to grow. Today I received some that are so hideous I didn’t want to take a picture of them. Normally I am not ashamed to use them – tacky rules! – but these, well they will stay in the drawer and just be viewed on special occasions.

4. When I was in high school, I was Punk Rock. I loved the Damned. I saw X at Fender’s Grand Ballroom in Long Beach. I have a picture of me and George Hurley from firehose. If you had told me when I was 17 that I would be 40 years old, and cutting out napkins and hankies out of a thrift store skirt while listening to X in my house in the burbs, I never would have believed you.

Why o why o why do we always leave everything till the last minute right before a craft show…and why o why o why did my husband buy a wii the week before the craft show…

Here is what he has been doing:

I know it’s dark, but I think you can get the idea.

And here is what I have been doing:

So, to give you a quick update:
-after meeting with our CPA yesterday I decided once and for all against the coffee shop. I won’t go into why, just suffice it to say the CPA interpreted the data and I think it’d be best if we stuck to rental properties. For now, anyway!
-I am going to come into some big money. Did you know there are hundreds of mailing lists for “spiritual” people selling magic string and whatnot, and they will pray for you if you send them $20, or give you a super-fantastic horoscope, or some such garbage…well last week I managed to snag my very own MAGIC MONEY MULTIPLIER! I put $20 in it and plan to have it multiply millions of times by 01/01/10. I’ll keep you posted.

-it looks like my boss and I will be moving our offices to a location in South Tulsa. Which will be much closer to my house. So instead of a 15-mile-each-way commute in horrible traffic, I’ll have a 4-mile-each-way commute. With one stoplight and two stop signs. I can handle that. I will miss my nice office with the nice windows in this building though.

OK well I hope to see you at Indie Emporium this weekend here in Tulsa. Stop by and say hi!!

So. Tired.

Wow, working 5 days a week really does suck. I’ve always thought that, but it’s particularly evident the first week back after an 11 day staycation. I’m so glad tomorrow’s Friday. It’s currently 8:09 p.m. and I’ve been ready for bed for 45 minutes.
Well let’s see, so far this week I’ve worked out twice with M, considered buying a coffee shop, gone out for desserts to the Wild Fork with some people from work, and have fruitlessly tried to cross items off my ever-growing to do list at work. I’ve also slept some, and I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw sunshine. Did the sun shine today? I don’t remember. But I don’t think so.
Yes, that’s right, I considered buying a coffee shop. There is one for sale. And I suspect I could get it for cheap, but…yeah there are lots of buts. Is the location very good? Do I really want to put ALL my time into something like that? Can I come up with a down payment? How do I do the books for a business that has employees? Could I draw a salary from it?
I was really excited about it at first, and arranged to talk to a CPA and an attorney. I could think of dozens of things to spruce the place up, improve it, promote it, market it. I would create 3 separate lines of business in the store, not just relying on coffee for revenue. I knew I could do it. Then all of a sudden, it just didn’t feel like the right thing to do. Was I just scared? Was it intuition telling me this wasn’t the right deal? I couldn’t say. And that bugs me.
It has been a dream of mine to own a business, to have a little shop. For a while now. So it seemed like this came along for me to look at…so if I ask for something in my life, and it shows up, and I don’t take it, am I stupid? Or is this really just a fake opportunity? Again, I couldn’t say. I am the world’s best second guesser, especially of myself.
I do know that owning a rental property is a whole lot easier…I just sit here and collect a rent check every month…maybe we’ll look for another one of those instead. Leaves me more time for sewing. Oh I mean sleeping.javahedgie

A Busy Staycation.

09/10/2009 by paperlotusdesign

Heavens to Betsy, this has been one busy staycation. For months I had envisioned days and days of hanging out, making things, eating, watching movies. Yeah, not so much.

We have watched some DVDs. I did make a few things in a frenzied attempt to prepare for last Saturday’s South Tulsa Music Festival craft show thingie. And I have eaten out more than I’d wanted to. But goodness, we’ve been busy.

While M and I were driving home on the highway from somewhere, I forget where, on Monday, we heard the car make a really weird screeching noise and when M turned the air conditioning off, we heard a really loud KA-THUNK and part of the car fell off. On the highway. We discovered, when we took the car to the mechanic on Tuesday, that the compressor had exploded. “Like a grenade” was an expression that was used. And it would cost $1500 to repair. Heavens.

So, we weighed our options, looked here, looked there, fretted, counted pennies, fretted some more, and then bought a 2007 Nissan Murano yesterday.
This thing is the fanciest, and biggest, car I’ve ever had. It has stuff on it that I probably won’t ever figure out how to use. It has a button to open the garage instead of using a garage door opener. It remembers where my seat settings were and where M’s were. It tells me my average mpg. And how many miles till the tank is empty. It tells me what direction I’m going. It has leather upholstery. It is big.

Large purchases like this stress me out so I’m a little overwhelmed but…I’m sure as we go along and I get more used to it, I will grow to love it a whole bunch. M loves it – he went out to check on it in the garage several times last night and he sat out there programming his seat positions and the garage door opener and all that…
Yes, it will be my car to drive and M gets the Accord. That is the way it is at our house. But it all works out in the end.

Doing Some Baking – finally!

08/31/2009 by paperlotusdesign

What started as having the sister-in-law over to look at our new house,  turned into a cookout for 11 people last Saturday. And you know how it’s always good to have too much stuff rather than too little? So we have been eating hamburgers and bratwurst for 2 days now.

I did one thing for the cookout that I haven’t done in a long time – and that is bake from scratch. I really like baking, more so than cooking.  It’s fun and relaxing, but the downside is – I tend to eat what I bake! I guess I could always bake and take the stuff to work but those people up there would be so unappreciative and probably think something was wrong with it since I made it. Maybe when we move our offices at the end of the year the new office-mates will be more receptive. But I won’t hold my breath. Anyway…

This time around I made some oatmeal chocolate chip cookies that seemed to be a big hit.

I also made cupcakes – yellow cupcakes with chocolate icing. The cupcakes themselves turned out a little dry, but the icing was heaven – well it was like chocolate air. It made up for the dryness of the cupcakes. Or so I like to tell myself.

Photo_082909_004The cat, who seems to be afraid of everything and everyone ever since the Great Flea Infestation of August 2009 sat right under my feet as the husband vacuumed.

New House, New…other stuff.

08/22/2009 by paperlotusdesign

We moved into our nice, new-er house here in the quiet ‘burbs last month. We like it a lot! However, this last week re discovered a feature it had that we hadn’t known about and quite frankly, we could live without.

FLEAS! Yes, that’s right, disgusting fleas. The guy who lived here before had a big old dog, which stayed all day out in the yard and then came in at night. He had the carpets cleaned before we moved in and so it just took a while for them to start back up again and find the cat. And my ankles. I think the guy must have known he had fleas – he could have been nice and bombed the place in the few days it was empty before we moved in. He also did a few other things that weren’t cool so overall, not impressed with his cleanliness or attention to detail…

Anyway the cat has been super itchy and even Frontline Plus didn’t help so we had to get a special pill from the vet that starts killing fleas within an hour. God only knows what’s in it…but she was miserable – scratching, cleaning and then jumping up and running away, hiding in the bathtub, just being generally really weird. After we gave her the pill she was so relieved not to be scratching she just slept like a rock, it was funny.

So now we are vacuuming every other day, with baking soda and salt, and borax, and spraying flea killer stuff and just hoping they go away. Dirty bastards. It’s kind of embarrassing and really gross so I hope we can get this straightened out soon…
